Good Evening parents/guardians!
I hope you have all enjoyed your Veteran’s Day weekend! It has been a chilly one! We had a short week last week, but we worked hard on practicing new concepts. We had our in-class spelling bee, and congratulations to Kimora on winning and we wish her luck as she competes in the school-wide spelling bee tomorrow!
Your scholars also brought home report cards with them on Thursday. Please sign the yellow comment card in the envelope and send the comment card and envelope back to school with your scholar. The report card is yours to keep!
Just a few reminders; please make sure you are checking your scholars agenda every night and initial/sign it. It will let you know if your scholar received any warnings for the day or if they had to leave the classroom for reflection. Also, please make sure to sign the green sheet in the back of your scholars Friday folder and return it with them the following Monday.
Please remember that you can always check your scholar’s grades, progress, and any missing assignments through PowerSchool. You can use your scholar’s login information or get a parent login from the school office.
Important Dates:
November 13th: School Wide Spelling Bee
November 17th: First Quarter Achievement Recognition (10:00am)

Here is a recap of what we engaged in this past week of school, as well as what we will be starting to learn next week!
Math:
This past week we continued to strengthen our skills on dividing decimal numbers by decimal numbers. We have been doing so through station activities. We also started to work on Order of Operations. We learned the acronym “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” and looked at Order of Operations Hopscotch to help us remember the order!
This week we will continue to work with the Order of Operations and will be practicing using it in stations and homework. We will also revisit decimal operations briefly before moving into our units on fractions!
Science:
This past week we continued working on Motion Graphs and practiced reading them and using them to answer questions. We also looked a how Motion Graphs can tell a story about the movement of an object and worked hard on creating our own Motion Graph Stories. They turned out great!
This week we will be using passages from the Science EOG Coach book to help us study and prepare for our Force and Motion Unit assessment on Friday, November 17th.We will also be filling out study guides, participating in Kahoot! Games, and looking at Study Jams to prepare. Your scholars are expected to complete a vocabulary book for this unit and they are due on Friday, November 17th.
Reading:
This past week we spiraled back to identifying the Main Idea and Details when reading nonfiction. Scholars were able to identify details that are relevant and support the main idea of the paragraph, section, or book. They used graphic organizers to track thinking while watching videos and reading reading selections.
This week, scholars will begin by identifying point of view. Scholars will then identify the author’s point of view in the passage and find the evidence within the passage to support the author’s point. Scholars will also be practicing proving their own thinking when answering comprehension questions.
Scholars should continue reading The Giver and preparing for our discussion groups by having answers prepared for the questions provided by Mr. Felker. Scholars not working with Mr. Felker are participating in a book study of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry with me. PLEASE encourage your child to read at home in preparation for class discussions.
Reading homework: Please have your child read 30 minutes (or more) each night and log the title of the book read and number of pages read into his/her agenda daily. This provides us with a record of your scholar’s reading so we can ensure he/she is reading “just right” books at an appropriate speed. Looking for ways to help your child with his/her reading homework? Please click here to view questions you can be asking your child about his/her book to check for understanding.
Social Studies:
This past week scholars continued to add to their knowledge of Native Americans by presenting the information they have learned to their classmates. As their classmates were presenting the information, scholars were expected to take notes on each region.
This week students will continue their understanding of Native American cultures and daily lives by reading Social Studies Weekly and answering questions. Scholars will be taking an assessment on Native Americans on Friday, November 17. They should study the notes they’ve taken.
Writing:
This past week scholars used their researched information to write a nonfiction book using the rubric they were provided. Scholars continued to work on writing their nonfiction books by writing an introduction, they also began to add nonfiction text features.
This week scholars will continue to work on writing their nonfiction research books using the rubric. They will be working to add the sections, complete with headings, as well as adding other nonfiction text features appropriate for their chosen topic.
